AFC Wimbledon Ladies beat league leaders Ipswich Town in the 97th minute
Sunday saw the top of the table clash between AFC Wimbledon and Ipswich Town. There were no doubts in that it was going to be an eventful match. The last time these two sides met it was the opening match of the season which ended in a 1-1 draw. Ipswich came into this game on Sunday undefeated having won every other game they had played after their draw against the dons at the start of the season. Spending most of the game 1-0 down, our ladies dug deep and their hard work was rewarded with a 88th minute equaliser and a 97th minute winner closing the gap in the league.
First Team Manager Kevin Foster was extremely proud of their efforts on Sunday, especially how they responded to multiple injuries, multiple yellow cards, a sending off early in the second half and that they were 1-0 down from the 8th minute onwards. Kevin was determined to get the win and after scoring the equaliser he made sure the ladies were not to sit back and take the point.
Kevin Foster, "I couldn't have been more proud of the whole squad today, they have come through so many obstacles in the game and with fergs our GK breaking her finger in the warm up and then 8 minutes into the game splitting her head open, from being 1-0 down and 1 player down to a team top of the league and on an unbeaten run in both league and cups. I thought towards the end of the first half and the start of the 2nd we started to get a hold of the game and put Ipswhich under pressure. The introduction of Lily gave us some real quality. We could have scored from three of her free kicks both direct and from her delivery into the box and she really got the ball going forward at times, she has been a great asset having joined from just before Christmas and is really settling in well. Today makes the league really interesting with 4/5 teams still within touching distance however for us just like all season we wont worry or look at this, we will continue to go out and enjoy our football and see where we are from that at the end of the season".
The late winner was caught on film from the bench as you can see below...
