MATCH REPORT VS. ENFIELD TOWN

Sunday 20th September

First game back after an extremely long wait during these difficult times and what a great way to start. Amazing to see so many young AFCW junior girls down watching with their parents and supporting our ladies in their opening league match. The players showed real spirit today and along with always looking at things to improve on, there were a lot of positives to come out of our first 90 minutes (96’) of the season.

After 25 minutes we should have been 2-0 up then in the 30th minute we found ourselves 1-0 down. From the way the game was going, our ladies were either going to put their heads down or pick themselves up and that’s exactly what they did. They dug deep in search for our opening goal and with some great link up play between the forwards Chewy takes the ball to the touchline and makes the perfect cross and in the 42’ minute Stanners found the back of the net tying the game up. Only 3 minutes later with a buzz on the pitch and some great press from our forward line in the 45’ minute right before the ref blew for half, Chloe plays the ball through and Stanners scored her second.

No changes were made at the half and the game plan stayed the same but in the 55’ minute after some miscommunication we saw ourselves level again. The last 35 minutes of the game were always going to be a fight. It seemed the oppo’ were playing for the draw with them making some defensive changes to adapt to our game. This did not stop the ladies looking for the winner and the closer it got the final whistle the more it was looking like we were going to end the game with only a point. our three subs were all made within 15 minutes of each other adding some fresh legs into the mix and hoping for a positive impact; and thats exactly what we got. Deep into injury time, the 6th minute to be precise, Kelly plays a blinding ball from the back down the wing curving into the path of Jess Lewery; one of this years latest signings, who with some great fight slid in front of the keeper to slot the ball home on her debut sending the crowd wild.

Looking at the season ahead it is such a positive to not only look at the strength of 11 on the pitch but our entire squad who all had an impact in todays game. It is a long season and everyone will play a huge part. We look forward to our 2 sessions this week in order to prepare for our away fixture to Stevenage next Sunday.

Thank you all for the support and we hope you enjoyed it enough to be back at our next home fixture on Wednesday 30th September 7.45pm KO.
